John Izard Middleton sketchbook, 1820-1823.

Sketchbook containing 49 drawings executed primarily with graphite pencil, as well as pen and ink, created with assistance of a camera obscura. Most drawings measure 24 cm. x 34 cm. Subjects of sketches include buildings, gardens, and ruins, and include views of several sites executed from various angles. Most drawings are initialed "J.I.M." and bear the year in which they were executed. Sketchbook cover is embossed "M.L.I. Middleton."

Amateur painter and archaeologist; son of Arthur Middleton and Mary Izard Middleton; educated at Cambridge, England; traveled extensively in Europe; published Grecian Remains in Italy, 1812; spent most of his adult life in France and Italy; in 1810 he married Eliza Augusta Falconet, the daughter of a banker in Naples; Middleton died in Paris, 1849.
